Waves, Listen to me!

Waves, Listen to me!, known in Japanese as Nami yo Kiite Kure, was created by mangaka Hiroaki Samura and began serialization in Kodansha's Afternoon magazine in 2014. Samura, who achieved significant acclaim for his historical epic Blade of the Immortal, shifted his focus here to the frenetic, dialogue-heavy world of late-night commercial radio in Sapporo. The narrative follows Minare Koda, a woman who finds herself thrust into the radio industry after a drunken rant is recorded and broadcast by a disgruntled station director.

The series is celebrated for its precise, kinetic line work and dense, witty scripts that capture the chaotic energy of broadcast media. Samura intended to explore the disconnect between a person’s public voice and their internal life, utilizing a sharp, observational tone that resonated with readers and critics alike. The work was well-received for its departure from traditional manga tropes, eventually inspiring both an anime adaptation and a live-action television series, cementing its status as a notable entry in the slice-of-life comedy genre.
