Where it came from
Released in the late 1980s during the height of the Nintendo Entertainment System's popularity in Japan, this manga adaptation of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link was part of a broader trend of comic book tie-ins intended to expand the lore of popular video games. The Ran Maru version is a specific iteration produced to appeal to younger readers who had enjoyed the challenging gameplay and darker fantasy atmosphere of the original sequel.
The adaptation was commissioned by Nintendo and illustrated by the artist known as Ran Maru. The artwork shifts the visual language of the game—which featured a unique side-scrolling perspective—into a dynamic, serialized comic format. While these volumes were often viewed as secondary marketing materials rather than essential canon, they remain sought after by completionists for their distinct mid-eighties aesthetic and as a record of how early Nintendo intellectual properties were interpreted across different media formats.
