Where it came from
Published in Japan in 1989, this volume is a manga adaptation of the seminal Nintendo Entertainment System title Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. Part of a wave of game-to-manga adaptations common in the late 1980s, the book was commissioned by Nintendo to capitalize on the immense popularity of the franchise. It represents an early effort to flesh out the lore and narrative of Hyrule beyond the limited technical capabilities of 8-bit hardware.
The adaptation was illustrated by Daisuke Shigoto, whose style reflects the vibrant, kinetic aesthetic typical of Shogakukan’s game-based manga of the era. The narrative simplifies the complex, side-scrolling mechanics of the game into a more traditional quest-based hero’s journey. While intended primarily as a promotional tie-in for younger fans, it has since become a sought-after relic among vintage game enthusiasts for its unique artistic interpretation of Link’s second outing.
