Where it came from
The Smoker leader card from the Paramount War set (OP02-093) was released in 2022 as part of the second major expansion for the One Piece Card Game. This card represents a significant departure from the game's initial focus, highlighting the Black color archetype, which centers on the mechanics of reducing character costs to manipulate the board. The card features Smoker, a high-ranking Marine officer known for his unwavering sense of justice and his smoke-based Devil Fruit abilities, placing him firmly within the set's thematic exploration of the Marineford conflict.
The alternate art version of this card features a stylized, high-contrast illustration that leans into the gritty aesthetic of the character. Designers at Bandai aimed to reflect Smoker's imposing presence and tactical leadership style, utilizing a sophisticated visual treatment that differentiates it from the standard card art. Upon its release, it was well-received by competitive players who appreciated both the distinct aesthetic and the card's utility in a control-based strategy, quickly becoming a sought-after piece for collectors focusing on high-rarity Marine-affiliated cards.
