Where it came from
Squard, the captain of the Maelstrom Spider Pirates, was featured as a promotional box topper for the Paramount War expansion of the One Piece Card Game, which was released in early 2023. As part of the second major set of the English-language version of the game, this card serves as a thematic tie-in to the Marineford arc of the series, where the character plays a pivotal role in the conflict between the Whitebeard Pirates and the Navy.
The card utilizes artwork consistent with the aesthetic of the Paramount War set, focusing on the character's appearance during the intense summit war. Designed by the card game's production team to entice collectors and players during the expansion's initial launch, the box topper format was utilized to encourage the purchase of full booster boxes, offering an alternate-art or promotional variant that highlights key characters from the expansive One Piece narrative.
