Where it came from
Thatch (OP03-005) was released as part of the Pillars of Strength expansion for the One Piece Card Game, specifically appearing in the pre-release promotional cycle for the set. It represents a significant tactical addition to the game's meta, centered on the character's role in the Whitebeard Pirates. The card reflects the strategic focus of the third main set, which leaned heavily into the high-stakes, defensive-to-offensive transitions characteristic of the Whitebeard archetype.
The design of this card incorporates the vibrant, action-oriented aesthetic consistent with the One Piece Card Game's visual identity, drawing directly from Eiichiro Oda's original manga illustrations. By highlighting Thatch in his mid-battle stance, the art team aimed to capture the intensity of his character. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its efficiency, as it provided essential deck-thinning and resource management capabilities, quickly becoming a staple in competitive play within the Red color alignment.
