Where it came from
The Zephyr leader card (OP02-072) was released as part of the Paramount War expansion for the One Piece Card Game in late 2022. This set drew heavily from the Marineford arc and associated film releases, featuring Zephyr, the primary antagonist of the 2012 film 'One Piece Film: Z'. The character was conceptualized by series creator Eiichiro Oda, who designed the former Admiral as a tragic, morally complex figure motivated by his disillusionment with the World Government.
The card design utilizes dynamic, illustrative artwork typical of the set's high-rarity aesthetic, emphasizing Zephyr's imposing 'Battle Smasher' mechanical arm. Within the meta-game, this card is notable for its tactical focus on the Black color identity, which centers on lowering the cost of opponent characters to facilitate removal. Upon its release, it was well-received by players for its thematic accuracy and the strategic depth it brought to the color's control-oriented playstyle.
