Where it came from
The Ampharos card from the Dragons Exalted set was released in August 2012 as part of the English Black & White series. This set was notable for introducing the Dragon type to the trading card game, marking a significant mechanical shift that had been anticipated by players for some time. As a member of the generation two roster, Ampharos was chosen to showcase the expansion's focus on powerful evolved Pokémon capable of supporting field dynamics through their unique abilities.
The artwork for this specific card was illustrated by Kagemaru Himeno, a long-standing artist in the Pokémon TCG community known for her distinctive, painterly approach to character design. Himeno aimed to capture Ampharos in a serene yet imposing stance, utilizing the set's signature holographic treatment to emphasize the electric discharge surrounding the creature. Upon release, the card was well-received by collectors who favored Himeno’s classic aesthetic style, which helped maintain a sense of continuity during the transition into the more modern, aggressive design language of the Black & White era.
