Provenance

Where it came from

Released in January 2003 as part of the Aquapolis expansion, this card represents the final major TCG set produced by Wizards of the Coast before Nintendo took over publishing operations. The set is notable for introducing the E-Reader functionality, which allowed players to scan dot-codes on the side of the cards to unlock supplemental data, mini-games, and Pokédex entries on the Game Boy Advance.

The artwork for this specific card was crafted by illustrator Atsuko Nishida, a pivotal figure in the franchise who is perhaps best known for designing Pikachu. Her work on this Holo-Rare Azumarill reflects the clean, vibrant aesthetic of the early 2000s era. While the E-Reader mechanic itself proved somewhat short-lived, the Crystal and Holo-Rare designs from this set are highly regarded by collectors today for their technical craftsmanship and historical significance in the transition between publishers.
