Where it came from
The Charizard VMAX card, specifically number 020/189, was released in the 2020 Pokémon Trading Card Game expansion titled Darkness Ablaze. This set was designed to introduce the VMAX mechanic to the English-language card game, a feature that translates the Gigantamax forms from the Pokémon Sword and Shield video games into high-health, powerful card variants. The artistic design captures Charizard in its Gigantamax form, emphasizing the creature's immense scale and fiery aura, consistent with the set's goal of showcasing the most formidable Pokémon of the Galar region.
The artwork was produced by artist aky CG Works, who utilized a distinct 3D-rendered style common for VMAX cards to convey a sense of depth and intensity. Upon its release, the card became a focal point for collectors due to the long-standing popularity of the Charizard character within the franchise. It was received as a centerpiece of the Darkness Ablaze expansion, serving as both a sought-after collectible for fans of the original base set era and a functional, high-tier card for competitive players during its standard rotation period.
