Where it came from
Coalossal 198/189 is a secret rare card released in the Darkness Ablaze expansion of the Pokémon Trading Card Game in 2020. This set drew heavily from the Generation VIII games, Pokémon Sword and Shield, and introduced the Gigantamax mechanic to the card game, which allowed specific Pokémon to undergo a massive, powerful transformation in battle. The design intent for this card was to capture the imposing, mountainous stature of Coalossal, a rock-and-fire type Pokémon inspired by coal mines and steam engines, reflecting the industrial themes present in the Galar region.
The artwork for this specific secret rare version was rendered by illustrator 5ban Graphics. Known for their consistent 3D-modeled aesthetic within the Pokémon card line, the studio utilized a dynamic angle to emphasize the Pokémon’s glowing, furnace-like chest and crystalline rocky exterior. Upon its release, the card was received as a prominent chase item for collectors, largely due to its striking Rainbow Rare foil treatment, which highlights the intricate textures of the illustration against a holographic spectrum.
