Where it came from
The Coalossal card, designated as SWSH024 within the Sword & Shield Black Star Promos set, was released in 2020 as part of the promotional rollout for the eighth generation of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. It was specifically distributed through the Galar Collection box, a product designed to showcase the new Pokémon native to the Galar region introduced in the Sword and Shield video games.
The card features artwork by illustrator kodama, who opted for a dynamic, rugged depiction that emphasizes the creature's coal-based anatomy and fiery temperament. As a promotional release, it provided players and collectors with an accessible way to acquire a Holofoil version of the Pokémon, helping to anchor the new fighting-type mechanics introduced during that expansion's early lifecycle.
