Where it came from
The Colress card was released in 2013 as part of the Pokémon Trading Card Game expansion Plasma Storm, which focused on the Team Plasma faction from the Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 video games. Colress serves as a prominent character in those titles, acting as a scientist who seeks to understand the true potential of Pokémon by studying the bond between them and their trainers. The card itself was designed to reflect his role as an analytical researcher, featuring a powerful 'Draw' effect that rewards players for having a large bench of Pokémon.
The card’s illustration was rendered by Ken Sugimori, the primary art director for the Pokémon franchise. Sugimori’s style for this card captures Colress’s signature calm and clinical demeanor, emphasizing his distinct lab coat and scientific aesthetic. Upon its release, the card became a staple in competitive play for years due to its utility in refreshing a player's hand, cementing its status as one of the most recognizable Trainer cards from the Black and White era of the game.
