Why it matters

As a rare holo card from the Team Rocket series, this psychic-type Dark Alakazam represents a pivotal shift in the game where classic creatures were reimagined with darker, more aggressive traits. Provenance

Where it came from

Dark Alakazam was released as part of the Team Rocket expansion in the Pokémon Trading Card Game, which debuted in Japan in 1997 and reached international markets in 2000. As the first set to introduce the 'Dark' archetype, it represented a narrative shift where Pokémon were reimagined with more aggressive traits and designs, reflecting the villainous aesthetic of the Team Rocket organization within the game lore.

The artwork for this card was created by Ken Sugimori, the primary character designer for the Pokémon franchise. His work on this piece captures a darker, more intimidating manifestation of Alakazam, departing from the standard presentation of the species. Upon release, the card was highly sought after by collectors and players alike, serving as a signature 'chase' card for the set and remaining a centerpiece for vintage Pokémon card enthusiasts.
