Where it came from
Dark Blastoise was introduced in the 2000 Team Rocket expansion, the first Pokémon Trading Card Game set to feature the 'Dark' mechanic. This concept explored the narrative shift within the franchise, focusing on the antagonists of the series who utilized evolved Pokémon with altered personalities and darker color palettes. The set served as a thematic departure from the Base Set, emphasizing a grittier aesthetic that resonated with players looking for more complex gameplay and a narrative connection to the Team Rocket criminal organization.
The card features artwork by Ken Sugimori, whose distinctively bold lines and character-focused style defined the early aesthetic of the Pokémon franchise. Sugimori sought to capture the more menacing, battle-hardened appearance associated with the 'Dark' evolution, using deep shadows and a stern expression to differentiate the card from its standard Blastoise counterpart. Upon release, the card was well-received by collectors and players alike for its unique 'Rocket' design and the inclusion of the fan-favorite Blastoise, marking a high point in the expansion's artistic appeal.
