Where it came from
The Dark Charizard card was released in 2000 as part of the Team Rocket expansion, the first Pokémon Trading Card Game set to introduce the concept of 'Dark' variants. These cards depicted Pokémon under the ownership of the villainous Team Rocket organization, reflected by darker artistic themes and altered gameplay mechanics. The expansion served to diversify the meta and appeal to fans drawn to the series' more mature, antagonistic narrative elements.
The illustration was crafted by the artist Ken Sugimori, a pivotal figure in the franchise’s visual development. Sugimori adopted a more aggressive, shadowed aesthetic for this set to differentiate the Dark Pokémon from their standard iterations. Upon its release, the card became an immediate focal point for collectors due to the immense popularity of the Charizard character, solidifying its status as a cornerstone piece of the Generation I era of the card game.
