Dark Celebi

Released in June 2004 as part of the EX Hidden Legends expansion, Dark Celebi serves as a notable entry in the Pokémon Trading Card Game's EX era. This set was designed to reintroduce the concept of 'Dark' Pokémon, which had previously appeared in the Team Rocket expansion, by tying them to the narrative of the villainous Team Aqua and Team Magma organizations. The card features a unique take on the mythical Pokémon Celebi, depicting it through the darker, more aggressive lens associated with the set's thematic focus on corrupted or manipulated creatures.

The card was illustrated by Hikuko Matsumura, an artist known for a distinct, stylized approach during the early 2000s. Matsumura's design for Dark Celebi moves away from the more ethereal depictions of the Pokémon common in other sets, opting for a moodier palette and sharp, focused lines to fit the 'Dark' aesthetic. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its 'Forest Breath' Poké-Body, which allowed for strategic energy acceleration, solidifying its place as a functional and collectible piece from a pivotal era in the game's history.
