Where it came from
The Dark Charizard card was introduced in the 2000 Team Rocket expansion, the first Pokémon Trading Card Game set to feature 'Dark' Pokémon. This set marked a thematic shift for the franchise, highlighting the influence of the villainous Team Rocket organization and their tendency to experiment on creatures to make them more powerful, albeit darker in nature.
The card’s artwork was illustrated by Mitsuhiro Arita, a foundational artist for the Pokémon franchise known for his distinct style in the original Base Set. Arita designed the Dark Charizard to appear more aggressive and intimidating than its base counterpart, using harsher shading and a more sinister pose to reflect the Pokémon's corrupted state. Upon release, the card was highly sought after by players and collectors alike, becoming an iconic emblem of the series' transition into more complex narrative themes.
