Lore

Why it matters

As a Rare ACE card, the Dowsing Machine occupies a unique place in a collection due to its restrictive design, which allows players to include only one such card in their entire deck. This limitation highlights its strategic value, as it serves as a powerful utility tool for retrieving discarded items when every choice in a deck must be carefully curated.

Provenance

Where it came from

The Dowsing Machine card was released as part of the Pokémon Trading Card Game's Black & White: Plasma Storm expansion, which launched in early 2013. The card introduced the ACE SPEC mechanic, a design concept that restricted players to having only one card of that rarity in their entire deck, balancing its powerful effect of retrieving any trainer card from the discard pile.

The card features artwork by 5ban Graphics, a design studio known for creating the sleek, CGI-rendered aesthetic prominent in the Black & White era of the franchise. It was well-received by competitive players for its utility in strategic play, though its status as an ACE SPEC meant it was frequently cycled in and out of tournament-legal formats as the game evolved.
