Provenance

Where it came from

The Ekans card, numbered 46/62, was released in the Fossil expansion of the Pokémon Trading Card Game in 1999. Following the immense success of the Base Set and Jungle expansion, the Fossil set was designed to introduce ancient and prehistoric-themed Pokémon, further expanding the roster of available creatures from the original Kanto region games.

The artwork was illustrated by Atsuko Nishida, one of the foundational artists of the Pokémon series. Nishida, who is also famously credited with the character design of Pikachu, employed a clean, minimalist style that captured the serpentine simplicity of Ekans. As a common card, it served as a functional building block for players, reflecting the period's focus on introducing diverse species types to the evolving competitive landscape.
