Provenance

Where it came from

Released in October 1999 as part of the Fossil expansion, this Horsea card was produced to expand the Pokémon Trading Card Game library during the height of the initial global phenomenon. As the third set released in the English-language market, Fossil introduced a variety of creatures originating from the prehistoric lore of the franchise, serving as a companion to the core Base Set and Jungle expansion.

The card features artwork by illustrator Ken Sugimori, whose distinctive, clean style defined the visual aesthetic of the first generation of Pokémon. Sugimori’s design focuses on a minimalist representation of the aquatic creature, intended to maintain consistency with the established brand identity of the series. Upon its release, it was widely collected as a common entry-level card, appreciated primarily by players building functional deck archetypes during the game's formative years.
