Provenance

Where it came from

The Geodude card from the 1999 Fossil expansion served as a fundamental component of the second major set of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. Following the massive success of the Base Set, the Fossil expansion was designed to introduce the remaining 151 original Pokémon species to the card game, capitalizing on the immense cultural momentum of the franchise at the tail end of the nineties.

The illustration was crafted by artist Kagemaru Himeno, a key contributor to the early aesthetic of the TCG. Her approach to the Geodude card focused on portraying the Pokémon in a gritty, textured manner that emphasized its rock-type nature within the game's evolving mechanics. Upon release, the card was received as a standard common entry, functioning primarily as a reliable fighting-type utility card for players building decks with limited resources.
