Where it came from
The Elgyem card, numbered 68/135, was released as part of the Pokémon Trading Card Game expansion Plasma Storm, which debuted in early 2013. This set was notable for centering on the Team Plasma narrative, featuring cards with distinctive blue-themed borders and the Team Plasma emblem. As a common card, Elgyem served as an accessible inclusion to bolster the Psychic-type rosters within the set, fitting into the broader artistic direction that emphasized the futuristic and technological aesthetic associated with the Plasma franchise.
The illustration for this card was created by Mizue, an artist who has contributed numerous pieces to the Pokémon TCG throughout the years. Mizue’s design for this Elgyem captures the creature's alien-like, cerebral character, utilizing the classic, clean digital art style prevalent in cards from the Black & White series. Upon its release, the card was widely distributed in booster packs, serving primarily as a collectible building block for players looking to complete the set or explore the mechanics of the Psychic type during the Plasma Storm era.
