Where it came from
The Elgyem card, numbered BW55 in the Black Star Promos set, was released as part of the Pokémon Trading Card Game's Black & White Series. It was distributed in 2013 as a promotional inclusion, commonly associated with the release of the 'Genesect and the Legend Awakened' TCG expansion, serving as a tie-in to the broader multimedia promotional efforts surrounding the Generation V Pokémon games and films.
The card features artwork by illustrator Kouki Saitou, who is well-regarded for his clean, expressive style within the Pokémon TCG community. Saitou’s design emphasizes the alien aesthetic of Elgyem, utilizing soft lighting to highlight the creature's bioluminescent features against a minimalist background. This promo was designed to provide players and collectors with an accessible, standalone entry for the Psychic-type Pokémon, receiving appreciation from fans for its vibrant coloring and technical precision.
