Where it came from
Released in early 2013 as part of the Plasma Storm expansion, this card represents the psychic-type Elgyem during the height of the Black & White series. The set introduced the Team Plasma thematic mechanic, characterized by unique blue-bordered card designs that signaled the presence of the villainous organization within the Pokémon Trading Card Game lore. As an uncommon card, it served as a functional piece of deck building for players navigating the competitive landscape of the time.
The artwork for this card was illustrated by Naoyo Kimura, a long-standing artist in the Pokémon TCG who often employs a soft, clean aesthetic. Kimura depicted Elgyem in a subdued, natural environment, focusing on the creature's mysterious, extraterrestrial nature. The design prioritizes clarity and character recognition, aligning with the broader artistic standards of the Black & White era which leaned toward vibrant, illustrative portrayals of Pokémon.
