Where it came from
Released in May 2013 as part of the Pokémon TCG: Black & White—Plasma Freeze expansion, this card represents a pinnacle of the set's Secret Rare tier. The Plasma Freeze series centered on the narrative of Team Plasma, incorporating the iconic blue-and-silver aesthetic associated with the organization's technological influence in the Unova region. As a Secret Rare, the card was designed to be a chase piece for collectors, distinguished by its unique gold-colored border and reflective foil treatment that differed from standard set inclusions.
The card features Empoleon, the final evolution of the Sinnoh region's Piplup, rendered in the distinct, high-contrast illustration style popularized during the Black & White era. The design choices emphasize the Pokémon's steel-type qualities and its powerful presence within the competitive meta of the time. Upon release, the card was well-received by both players who valued its utility in the trading card game and collectors who sought out the limited-run aesthetic variations that define the Secret Rare category.
