Where it came from
Empoleon (81/131) was released in the Forbidden Light expansion of the Pokémon Trading Card Game, which debuted in early 2018. This set was primarily centered on the legendary Pokémon Xerneas and Yveltal and served as the fifth main expansion in the Sun & Moon Series, drawing inspiration from the Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon video games. The card features Empoleon, the final evolution of the Sinnoh region starter Piplup, emphasizing its dual Water and Steel-type identity.
The artwork for this card was created by artist Kouki Saitou, who has been a prolific contributor to the Pokémon TCG for many years. Saitou’s design utilizes a dynamic, shimmering holographic foil treatment that highlights the metallic texture of Empoleon’s armor-like plumage. Upon release, the card was generally well-received by players for its 'Total Command' ability, which provided a strategic buff to the user's board state, cementing its utility in the competitive meta of that era.
