Where it came from
The Empoleon BW56 promotional card was released as part of the Black & White Series Black Star Promos, a collection of cards distributed in North America throughout the early 2010s to support the expansion of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. This specific card was made available in 2012, primarily through the Empoleon Box, a themed product that bundled the card with several booster packs. It represents a period where the Pokémon Company focused on highlighting evolved forms of starter Pokémon through standalone box sets to engage both players and collectors.
The card features artwork by Kagemaru Himeno, a long-standing illustrator within the franchise known for a soft, character-focused style that emphasizes the personality of the Pokémon. In this illustration, Empoleon is depicted in a dynamic pose that showcases its steel-type trident design, reflecting the aesthetic shift of the Black & White era which favored bold lines and vibrant, high-contrast digital coloring. The card was well-received by collectors who favored its holographic treatment, which was exclusive to this specific promotional release.
