On the night of a full moon, if shadows move on their own and laugh, it must be Gengar's doing.

Where it came from
The Gengar card, numbered SWSH241, was released as a promotional item within the Sword & Shield Series Black Star Promos. This set functioned as a bridge between major expansion releases, serving as a dedicated line for cards distributed through specific retail partnerships, collection boxes, and event participation. The card was specifically included in the Gengar VMAX High-Class Deck released in Japan, and later localized for international audiences as part of the Gengar VMAX Special Collection in 2022.
The design of this iteration features artwork by Kagemaru Himeno, a long-standing illustrator for the Pokémon Trading Card Game known for a distinct, painterly style. Himeno sought to emphasize the ghostly, mischievous nature of Gengar, utilizing dynamic lighting and a deep psychic palette to capture the creature's presence. Upon release, the card was well-received by collectors for its vibrant aesthetic and its inclusion of the popular Gengar character, which remains a staple of the franchise's most iconic Ghost-type designs.
