Where it came from
Giovanni's Exile was released in 2019 as part of the Hidden Fates expansion for the Pokémon Trading Card Game. This set was unique for its high focus on shiny Pokémon and its inclusion of a 'Shiny Vault' subset, which made it highly sought after by collectors. The card features Giovanni, the iconic antagonist and leader of Team Rocket, depicted in a dramatic, command-oriented stance consistent with his character's established lore in the franchise.
The card was illustrated by Ken Sugimori, the primary character designer and illustrator for the Pokémon series since its inception. Sugimori's work on this card maintains his signature clean, structured style, focusing on a sense of authority and menace to mirror Giovanni's role in the original Generation I games. Upon release, the card was received as a functional trainer card within the game's meta, valued for its ability to discard cards from the hand to disrupt an opponent's strategy, while simultaneously serving as a nostalgic piece for long-time series enthusiasts.
