Where it came from
Giovanni's Exile was released in the Hidden Fates expansion for the Pokémon Trading Card Game, which debuted in August 2019. The set is notable for its high concentration of Shiny Pokémon and its focus on the Kanto region, serving as a nostalgic celebration of the franchise's history. This specific card represents the final Trainer card in the main set, featuring Giovanni, the iconic antagonist and leader of Team Rocket, depicted in his classic sinister aesthetic.
The card was illustrated by Ken Sugimori, the primary character designer and illustrator for the Pokémon franchise since its inception. Sugimori's approach for this card emphasizes Giovanni’s imposing authority, utilizing clean lines and a composed color palette that reflects the character's cold, calculating nature. Upon its release, it was well-received by players and collectors alike, valued for its utility in competitive play as a card that allows players to discard cards from their hand to disrupt their opponent's board state.
