Imposter Professor Oak

Imposter Professor Oak was originally released in the 1999 Base Set of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. Designed as a Trainer card, it provided a strategic disruption mechanic that forced players to discard their hand and draw seven new cards, reflecting the chaotic nature of an imposter infiltrating the research lab. Its inclusion in the 2021 Celebrations: Classic Collection was a nostalgic homage intended to celebrate the game's twenty-fifth anniversary by reissuing iconic cards with their original artwork and layout.

The artwork for the original card was created by Ken Sugimori, the primary character designer and illustrator for the Pokémon franchise. His style during the early years of the game focused on clean, distinctive character poses that defined the aesthetic of the Kanto region. When this card appeared in the Classic Collection, it retained the original holographic foil pattern and the 'Base Set' stamp to distinguish it from the 1999 release while preserving the vintage feel that players associated with the early era of the hobby.
