Provenance

Where it came from

Released in May 2003 as part of the Skyridge expansion, this card represents one of the final entries in the original e-Reader series published by Wizards of the Coast before Nintendo transitioned the Pokémon Trading Card Game operations fully to their internal branch. The set was designed to be compatible with the Game Boy Advance e-Reader peripheral, which allowed players to scan cards to unlock game data, minigames, or Pokedex entries, marking a brief but ambitious period of interactive technology integration in the hobby.

The artwork for this Kadabra was illustrated by Mitsuhiro Arita, a staple artist of the early TCG era known for his clean, expressive style. Arita’s depiction emphasizes the psychic, telekinetic nature of the Pokémon, utilizing the distinctive frame design of the Skyridge set which featured extended borders to accommodate e-Reader scanning codes. Following the release of this card, the Kadabra character became notably absent from the TCG for nearly two decades due to a highly publicized legal dispute involving the magician Uri Geller, making this Skyridge printing a significant artifact of the period preceding that long hiatus.
