Where it came from
The Lapras card was released in 1999 as part of the Fossil expansion, the third set of the Pokémon Trading Card Game produced by Wizards of the Coast. Following the global phenomenon of the Base Set and the Jungle expansion, the Fossil set was designed to introduce Pokémon discovered in the Kanto region’s Cinnabar Island laboratory, drawing heavily from the lore of the original Game Boy titles. It was intended to capitalize on the massive momentum of the franchise, offering collectors a mix of fan-favorite Water-type Pokémon and the introduction of prehistoric fossil-themed creatures.
The artwork for this Holo Rare card was created by Mitsuhiro Arita, one of the most prolific and iconic illustrators in the history of the trading card game. Arita’s vision for this piece emphasizes the serene and majestic nature of Lapras, capturing the creature floating peacefully in a deep blue ocean setting. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players and collectors alike, valued both for its beautiful holographic treatment and its competitive utility in the early game meta due to its high hit points and reliable defensive capabilities.
