Where it came from
Released in the year 2000 as part of the Team Rocket expansion, the first Pokémon Trading Card Game set to feature the villainous organization, this card marked a departure from the traditional themes of the Base Set. The set introduced the concept of Dark Pokémon and reflected the grittier, more antagonist-focused narrative of the early Pokémon anime and games, providing a thematic shift for players who had become familiar with the standard evolutionary lines of the original 151 species.
The artwork for this specific Magikarp was illustrated by Kagemaru Himeno, a prominent artist whose work became a cornerstone of the early TCG aesthetic. Himeno was known for a whimsical yet precise style that captured the character of the Pokémon within the limitations of the small card frame. While Magikarp is often mocked in lore for its perceived helplessness, this illustration maintains the classic, wide-eyed expression that became iconic for the species, contributing to the card's enduring status as a nostalgic piece for those who collected the early WOTC-era sets.
