Where it came from
Released in August 2012, this Magikarp card was part of the Dragons Exalted expansion for the Pokémon Trading Card Game. This set was notable for introducing the Dragon type to the game, though Magikarp remained a Water-type Pokémon consistent with its legacy. It served as a functional common card, designed to fill out the set’s roster while emphasizing the classic, humble nature of the species before its eventual evolution into Gyarados.
The artwork for this specific card was illustrated by Naoyo Kimura, a long-time contributor to the Pokémon TCG series known for a distinct, painterly style. Kimura’s design for this card depicts Magikarp in a serene, aquatic environment, capturing its signature vacant expression and iconic splash pose. As a common card, it was widely distributed in booster packs of the era and remains a recognizable entry in the modern card catalog.
