Where it came from
Magikarp 50/130 is part of the Base Set 2 expansion, released in early 2000 as a reprint set for the international market. Because the original Base Set had gone out of print, this collection was created to ensure that players and collectors could still access essential cards from the early days of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. It functioned as a bridge, maintaining the momentum of the game during the transition between major releases.
The card features the iconic illustration by Ken Sugimori, whose artwork defined the visual aesthetic of the first generation of Pokémon. Designed to reflect the character's famously pathetic yet persistent nature, the card depicts Magikarp in its signature splashing pose. Like many uncommon cards in the set, it was widely collected by those building out their Pokédex, serving as a staple component for players who valued the card's low energy cost for its potential evolution into Gyarados.
