Where it came from
Malamar 138/197 was introduced in the Scarlet & Violet—Obsidian Flames expansion, released in August 2023. As part of the ninth main expansion in the Scarlet & Violet series, this card represents the Overturning Pokémon, featuring artwork by illustrators who focus on capturing the creature's hypnotic and cephalopod-inspired aesthetic. The set itself was designed to highlight the Terastal phenomenon, a core mechanic of the ninth generation of Pokémon games, providing players with new tactical options in the trading card game.
The card features the standard uncommon rarity design associated with the modern Pokémon Trading Card Game. Its inclusion in Obsidian Flames reflects the ongoing cycle of competitive card rotations, offering players a darkness-type option that aligns with the set's emphasis on type-shifting and strategic variety. Like many cards in the series, the design aims to balance the intricate, high-contrast visual style typical of the modern era with clear, functional iconography for gameplay clarity.
