Where it came from
Malamar 51/131 was released in May 2018 as part of the Pokémon Trading Card Game expansion Forbidden Light, which drew thematic inspiration from the Nintendo 3DS titles Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. This set focused heavily on the legendary Pokémon Necrozma and its various forms, while also introducing key utility cards that significantly altered the competitive landscape of the game at the time.
The card was illustrated by Kouki Saitou, a long-standing artist for the series known for his clean, expressive style. Saitou captured Malamar’s eerie, cephalopod-like aesthetic and its psychic-type nature. Within the competitive meta, this specific iteration of Malamar became highly sought after for its 'Psychic Recharge' ability, which allowed players to accelerate energy cards from their discard pile, making it a cornerstone of successful deck archetypes throughout its time in the standard rotation.
