Provenance

Where it came from

Released in early 2000, Base Set 2 was designed as a bridge for players and collectors to access cards that had become difficult to find following the initial success of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. It served as a compilation set, pulling popular cards from the original Base Set and the Jungle expansion, providing a renewed market presence for early staples like Paras.

The artwork for this specific card features the work of Ken Sugimori, the lead designer and illustrator for the Pokémon franchise. Sugimori’s minimalist, watercolor-inspired aesthetic for the early sets focused on presenting the creature in a neutral environment, emphasizing the functional anatomy and character traits of the mushroom-backed bug-type Pokémon as established in the Game Boy titles.
