Provenance

Where it came from

The Pidgey card from the Legendary Collection, numbered 85/110, was released in May 2002 as part of the first Wizards of the Coast reprint set. Designed to commemorate the early years of the Pokémon Trading Card Game, the set pulled popular cards from the Base Set, Jungle, and Fossil expansions and updated them with a distinct holographic foil treatment known as 'reverse holofoil' for cards that were originally non-holographic.

While the original Pidgey artwork was illustrated by Mitsuhiro Arita for the Base Set release, the Legendary Collection version features the same classic design within a modernized layout. Because Pidgey was a common card, it was widely available upon release and served as a nostalgic touchstone for collectors who had followed the franchise since its international debut in 1999. The set is now primarily noted for its unique, high-shine foil patterns that distinguish it from the original print runs.
