Provenance

Where it came from

The Pidgey card (73/112) was released in 2004 as part of the EX FireRed & LeafGreen expansion for the Pokémon Trading Card Game. This set was designed to coincide with the release of the eponymous Game Boy Advance remakes of the original Pokémon titles, effectively reintroducing the Kanto region experience to a new generation of players. It featured updated card layouts and mechanics that distinguished it from the earlier Wizards of the Coast era.

The artwork for this particular card was produced by Mitsuhiro Arita, one of the most prolific and iconic illustrators in the history of the franchise. Arita utilized his characteristic watercolor-adjacent style to depict Pidgey in a naturalistic, serene setting. As a common card, it was intended as a foundational piece for deck building, meant to reflect the ubiquity of the species in the early stages of the video games.
