Where it came from
Prinplup #28/108 was released in 2012 as part of the Pokémon Trading Card Game expansion titled Dark Explorers. This set was notable for introducing a significant number of Generation V Pokémon to the TCG, while focusing on the contrast between light and dark thematic elements. The card depicts the Penguin Pokémon in a standard pose, consistent with the set's intent to provide reliable middle-stage evolutions for players building decks around water-type synergy.
The artwork for this particular card was produced by kawayoo, an artist frequently featured in the series during the Black & White era. Their design for Prinplup emphasizes a clean, digital aesthetic that was characteristic of the period's card illustrations. As an uncommon-rarity card, it served as a functional piece for players rather than a high-value collector's item, designed primarily to facilitate the evolutionary chain from Piplup to Empoleon within the competitive meta of the time.
