Rattata

Released in early 2000, Base Set 2 served as a strategic compilation for the Pokémon Trading Card Game, designed to maintain the availability of key cards after the original Base Set and Jungle expansion began to phase out. As a reprint set, it utilized the familiar artwork of the earlier releases while adopting a new set symbol—a '2' inside a Poké Ball—to distinguish these cards from their original counterparts. The Rattata card, bearing the number 89/130, retains the clean, minimalist aesthetic of the first generation of English TCG prints, reflecting the classic Sugimori style that defined the early era of the hobby.

The Rattata illustration captures the creature in a characteristic, alert pose, emphasizing its status as one of the most common and recognizable Pokémon from the Kanto region. While the artwork itself was originally commissioned for the 1999 Base Set, its inclusion in Base Set 2 was intended to provide newer players with easy access to fundamental gameplay pieces. Though widely considered a common card, it holds a nostalgic significance for collectors who started their journey during the game's initial global expansion, serving as a representative example of the card design philosophy that prioritized readability and straightforward mechanics during the late nineties.
