What it does
At any time between turns, remove 1 damage counter from Root Fossil.
Play Root Fossil as if it were a Basic Pokémon. While in play, Root Fossil counts as a Colorless Pokémon (as well as a Trainer card). Root Fossil has no attacks of its own, can't retreat, and can't be affected by any Special Conditions. If Root Fossil is Knocked Out, it doesn't count as a Knocked Out Pokémon. (Discard it anyway.) At any time during your turn before your attack, you may discard Root Fossil from play.

Where it came from
The Root Fossil card was released as part of the EX Power Keepers expansion in February 2007. This set served as the final installment of the EX Series of the Pokémon Trading Card Game, which was published by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company International after they took over operations from Wizards of the Coast. As a Trainer card, it was designed to bridge the gap between core gameplay mechanics and the fossil-revival system, allowing players to search their decks for Lileep to represent the prehistoric Pokémon’s resurrection from ancient rock.
The artwork features the distinctive, weathered aesthetic characteristic of the EX-era design language, which favored a gritty and textured look for fossil items. Illustrator Mitsuhiro Arita contributed to the set, though the card itself leans into the standardized, functional visual identity intended to provide clarity for competitive play. While considered a common card, it holds significance as a representative of the concluding chapter of the EX era, a period noted for its experimental mechanics and shift toward the modern era of the game.
