Provenance

Where it came from

Released in May 2003, the Skyridge expansion served as the final set produced by Wizards of the Coast for the Pokémon Trading Card Game before the license transitioned to The Pokémon Company. As part of the e-Card Series, the set was designed to integrate with the Nintendo Game Boy Advance e-Reader peripheral, allowing players to scan the dot-code strips on the cards to unlock Pokédex data and mini-games. This technological integration represented an ambitious, though ultimately short-lived, effort to bridge the gap between physical card play and digital gaming.

The Seel card, numbered 94/144, features illustration work by Midori Harada, a prolific artist known for her soft, painterly style that helped define the aesthetic of the early 2000s Pokémon sets. The card depicts the sea lion Pokémon in a serene, aquatic environment, consistent with the set's focus on immersive, illustrated landscapes. Because Skyridge was distributed toward the end of the e-Reader cycle and faced lower initial print runs compared to earlier sets, it is now regarded as one of the most sought-after expansions by historical collectors.
