Where it came from
Released in September 2003 as part of the EX Sandstorm expansion, this card captures Shiftry in the early years of the Pokémon Trading Card Game's EX era. This set was notable for introducing the EX mechanic, which featured powerful Pokémon with high hit points, shifting the competitive landscape toward more aggressive play styles. The expansion drew its thematic inspiration from the Hoenn region, specifically the harsh desert environments depicted in the Ruby and Sapphire video games.
The artwork for this specific card was rendered by Mitsuhiro Arita, one of the most prolific and celebrated illustrators in the history of the franchise. Arita’s approach for this piece emphasizes Shiftry’s wind-manipulating characteristics, utilizing dynamic lines to convey a sense of motion. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its ability to integrate into grass-type decks, and it remains a nostalgic touchstone for collectors who began their journey during the transition to the third generation of the trading card game.
