Where it came from
Skarmory ex was released in 2007 as part of the EX Power Keepers expansion, the final set in the long-running EX Series of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. This set served as a closing chapter for the era, gathering iconic Pokémon and mechanics from the Advanced Generation period before the game transitioned to the Diamond & Pearl generation. The card features the signature EX mechanic, which introduced powerful, high-HP Pokémon that granted the opponent two prize cards upon being knocked out, fundamentally shifting competitive play at the time.
The artwork for this card was provided by Ryo Ueda, a prominent illustrator known for a distinct, high-contrast digital style that emphasized the metallic, aerodynamic qualities of the species. By capturing Skarmory in a dynamic, sweeping pose, the design aimed to highlight its Steel/Flying typing and defensive capabilities. Within the competitive meta of the mid-2000s, this card was recognized for its strategic utility, specifically its ability to withstand significant damage while utilizing specialized attacks that challenged the prevailing playstyles of the late EX-era format.
