Steelix

The Steelix card from the HS—Unleashed expansion was released in 2010 as part of the Pokémon Trading Card Game's HeartGold & SoulSilver series. This era of the game reintroduced the Prime mechanic, a design choice intended to capture the aesthetic of the original Power-level cards from the early days of the franchise. These cards featured distinct, stark holographic patterns and simplified, bold artwork that emphasized the raw strength of the Pokémon represented, serving as a nostalgic nod for long-term players while maintaining relevance in the contemporary competitive landscape.

The illustration for this particular Steelix was executed by artist Takashi Yamaguchi, known for a signature style that utilizes heavy, metallic brushwork and sharp, dynamic compositions. In this iteration, the artist sought to emphasize the colossal, serpentine nature of the Iron Snake Pokémon by curling its massive form across the frame to convey a sense of stored energy and durability. Upon release, the card was well-regarded by collectors for its polished finish and the utility of its Gaia Crush attack, solidifying its place as a standout entry within the Unleashed set.
