Superior Energy Retrieval

Superior Energy Retrieval was first introduced to the Pokémon Trading Card Game during the Black & White series, specifically appearing as part of the Plasma Freeze expansion released in 2013. This set drew its thematic inspiration from the Team Plasma storyline found in the Black 2 and White 2 video games, characterized by the inclusion of Team Plasma-themed Pokémon cards which featured distinctive blue-bordered designs. The card serves as a strategic trainer item, allowing players to recover basic energy cards from the discard pile at the cost of discarding other cards from their hand.

The artwork for this specific print was illustrated by 5ban Graphics, a design collective frequently commissioned by The Pokémon Company to produce clean, digital-style illustrations for trainer cards and special Pokémon prints. Their work on this card emphasizes the utility-focused aesthetic common to the era, utilizing a stark, functional layout that highlights the item's role in resource management. While not as rare as the holographic or secret rare cards of the set, it became a staple in competitive decks of the period due to its efficiency in fueling powerful energy-dependent attacks.
